Tip Tow 1/48th Scale Model -- Page 1

One of the more interesting experiments undertaken to extend the range of the early jets in order to give fighter protection to the piston engineed bombers, was the provision for in-flight attachment/detachment of fighter to bomber via wingtip connections. One of the several programs during these experiments was done with a B-29 mother ship and two F-84D "children", and was code named "Tip Tow." This is my model of that experiment, depicted as it occured on 20 October, 1950. The three aircraft were an EB-29 serial 44-62093, on the right wing was coupled EF-84D serial 48-661 flown by Major C.E. Anderson, and on the left wing was coupled EF-84D serial 48-641 flown by Major John M. Davis. During this flight, they achieved their longest successful flight with the three aircraft coupled for 2 hours 40 minutes.

The B-29 is a Monogram kit, with modifications to depict the EB-29 as used in the Tip Tow program. The two Thunderjets are Tamiya F-84G kits shortened to "D" length. The decals specific to Tip Tow are home made using PageMaker, an ALPS MD-2010 printer, and clear decal sheets from Bare Metal Foil.

The complete model is shown on this page. Detailing and modifications done to provide support to bear the weight of the Thunderjets are shown on the next page.

For additional information, see the book Republic F-84, A Photo Chronicle by David McLaren, which has some photos and discussion about the Tip Tow tests, and also, C.E. "Bud" Anderson's web site.

These photos were taken at the 3rd Annual Model Show at the Captain Michael King Smith Evergreen Aviation Museum (the "Spruce Goose" museum), McMinnville, Oregon, 23rd September, 2000. The model received First Award in the Multi-engined aircraft category.
