HAWK 1/48th "GUERRILLA COMBAT TEAM" KIT #300
[Zero Length Launcher with "F-84E"]

Collectors' prices: Unknown

A fellow modeler, Ted Theoe, loaned me this kit for "review", and what an interesting kit it is! Although labelled as a "Guerrilla Combat Team" and dated 1964, it could more correctly be labelled "Zero Length Launch Team" and the instruction sheet reflects that. But considering the date on the kit, even the ZEL, undertaken in 1954 with the F-84, was far out of date. I don't have any background of this kit; anyone with specifics, .

KIT REVIEW

This Hawk F-84, purported to be an E-model (which it is not), and the ZEL equipment, is injection molded "in three precise color matched tones of plastic with painting virually unnecessary." Clearly, that was not written for today's modeler! I won't reiterate the details of the F-84 here, as those details are set out on the Hawk kit #505 review page, which see. What is interesting about this particular kit, is that what are the underwing auxiliary fuel tanks on Hawk's other "stand-alone" F-84 kits, are "napalm" tanks for the purposes of this kit, and are mounted outboard of the main gear wells. I have not seen any indication, photos or otherwise, that such pylons or weapons were ever used on the F-84. Perhaps someone will be happy to furnish any information one way or the other?

Although gear is furnished with the kit, and the instructions and box art show the model with gear extended, the ZEL tests were done with gear up. The kit owner built the plane with gear up, and also partially completed the launcher. The decals were already applied to the plane, so I was not able to "scan" them; however, they are identical to those supplied in other Hawk 48th scale F-84 kits. In any case, those decals are for an F-84 which was never used for ZEL purposes. The decals for the launcher were not applied and are shown below.

This Hawk 1/48th scale "Guerrilla Combat Team", kit #303 is owned by Ted Theoe who built the F-84 part of the kit many years ago. He also started building the launch trailer and tow rig, but it was never finished and has languished in the box. Several of the parts Ted had put together were broken when he loaned the kit to me for this review. I reglued the broken parts, and set the launcher and tow rig together enough to set the F-84 on the launcher for photos. It makes quite an interesting display, and if built with some reasonable detailing, could make into a reasonably realistic, as well as a very interesting and unusual model.

KIT RATING
Rate One-halfRate One-halfRate One-halfRate One-halfRate One-half

This Hawk "Guerrilla Combat Team" it is now primarily a collector's kit; I have no idea what asking prices may be. For purposes of building an accurate F-84 Thunderjet, the kit is not worth buying. On the other hand, where else can you get a model of a Zero Length Launch system without scratch building one! Presuming you can find one. Okay, so I have played with the rating system!
