Thunderjet Nose Gear Comparison

The Thunderjet had two different styles of nose landing gear wheels fitted. The "early" models, XP-84 to P-84C, with the hydraulic gear collapse system had the gear without the shrink strut forward of the main oleo strut and without the small rectangular gear fairing door at the bottom of the nose inlet ring. The "late" models, F-84D/E/G, with the mechanical gear collapse system had the gear with shrink strut forward of the main oleo strut and with the small rectangular gear fairing door at the bottom of the nose inlet ring. There are many other detail differences that are revealed upon close inspection. The two illustrations show the difference, except that the illustration of the D-model nose gear shows the "early" style wheels with a 19x6.8 size tire rather than the correct "late" style wheels with a 20x4.4 size tire.
