Thunderjet Nose Wheel Comparison

The Thunderjet had four different styles of nose landing gear wheels fitted. The "early" models, XP-84 to P-84C, with the hydraulic gear collapse system had the either (1) a "perforated" ribbed style or (2) an "open" steel disk style nose wheel. I do not have a photo of the "perforated" ribbed style wheel; the two illustrations show the difference. Both of the "early" style wheels mounted a 19x6.8 size tire.

The "late" models, F-84D/E/G, with the mechanical gear collapse system had either (3) an "open" steel disk style or (4) a "closed" ribbed style nose wheel. I do not have an illustration of the "closed" ribbed style wheel; the photos show the difference. Both of the "late" style wheels mounted a 20x4.4 size tire.

After inspection of many photos, plus the notes from E.J. Boss, my conclusion about the use of each variant is as follows: (1) was used mainly on the XP-84, with some use up to P-84B; (2) was used for XP-84A through P-84C; (3) was used generally on F-84D through G, with some use of (4) on F-84E and G.
